Her bosses enlist her as part of a dwindling skeleton crew with a big end-date payoff. So Candace barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps New York. She’s content just to carry on: She goes to work, troubleshoots the teen-targeted Gemstone Bible, watches movies in a Greenpoint basement with her boyfriend. With the recent passing of her Chinese immigrant parents, she’s had her fill of uncertainty. Maybe it’s the end of the world, but not for Candace Chen, a millennial, first-generation American and office drone meandering her way into adulthood in Ling Ma’s offbeat, wryly funny, apocalyptic satire, Severance.Ĭandace Chen, a millennial drone self-sequestered in a Manhattan office tower, is devoted to routine. A stunning, audacious book with a fresh take on both office politics and what the apocalypse might bring." ― Michael Schaub, NPR.org "A fierce debut from a writer with seemingly boundless imagination. Born in 1950 in Geneva, Switzerland, of American parents, he grew up in Michigan, where he received a classical Jesuit education. Richard Tarnas is the founding director of the graduate program in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where he currently teaches. It opens up a new cosmic horizon that reunites science and religion, intellect and soul, modern reason and ancient wisdom. Whether read as astrology updated for the quantum age or as a contemporary classic of spirituality, Cosmos and Psyche is a work of immense sophistication, deep learning, and lasting importance. This brilliant book points to a radical change in our understanding of the cosmos, shining new light on the drama of history and on our own critical age. In these pages, distinguished philosopher and cultural historian Richard Tarnas traces the connection between cosmic cycles and archetypal patterns of human experience. Based on thirty years of meticulous research, and on thinkers from Plato to Jung, Cosmos and Psyche explores the planetary correlations of epochal events like the French Revolution, the two world wars, and September 11. A groundbreaking book that explores how astrology can inform our understanding of the events that have shaped our world-the inspiration for the docuseries Changing of the Gods. James Riley’s novel is more a re-imagined and greatly embroidered fairy tale than it is a fractured one. A host of familiar fairy tale characters appear, including-but certainly not limited to-Snow White, Merriweather, Malevolent, Red Riding Hood, the Wicked Queen, the Huntsman, the Seven Dwarves, and Rapunzel. Along the way, he and May pick up a dainty companion (a fairy), a noble companion (Prince Phillip) and a scary companion (the Wolf King). Before you know it, Jack is facing witches and wolves, taking on giants and dragons with the best of them. Her grandmother is missing, and she needs Jack’s help to save the old woman. Still, that hardly seems to matter when a princess named May unexpectedly drops into his life. He alone, of all the village boys, has failed his princess-saving test. Unfortunately, Jack doesn’t seem to be very good at it. His education is devoted to learning how to save a princess, since that is the only way to escape his life as a peasant. Living with his grandfather in the shadow of his father’s reputation as a thief, Jack is a different sort of hero. No, that Jack was this Jack’s father and this Jack hasn’t seen him since that famous encounter with the giant. But he is not the fairy tale Jack of Beanstalk fame. The first character we meet in this tale is Jack. Half Upon A Time has it all-voice, charming fairy tale characters with a twist, hilarity, and an adventure-filled plot. And she demonstrates precisely why the market has not-and cannot-fix the climate crisis but will instead make things worse, with ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods, accompanied by rampant disaster capitalism. She exposes the ideological desperation of the climate-change deniers, the messianic delusions of the would-be geoengineers, and the tragic defeatism of too many mainstream green initiatives. Klein meticulously builds the case for how massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to simultaneously reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies. It’s an alarm that calls us to fix an economic system that is already failing us in many ways. In This Changes Everything Naomi Klein argues that climate change isn’t just another issue to be neatly filed between taxes and health care. In short, either we embrace radical change ourselves or radical changes will be visited upon our physical world. The most important book yet from the author of the international bestseller The Shock Doctrine, a brilliant explanation of why the climate crisis challenges us to abandon the core “free market” ideology of our time, restructure the global economy, and remake our political systems. But when blood actually starts to spill into the waters of Indian Lake, she pulls us into her dizzying, encyclopedic mind of blood and masked murderers, and predicts exactly how the plot will unfold. And Jade narrates the quirky history of Proofrock as if it is one of those movies. She lives in her own world, a world in which protection comes from an unusual source: horror movies…especially the ones where a masked killer seeks revenge on a world that wronged them. Jade Daniels is an angry, half-Indian outcast with an abusive father, an absent mother, and an entire town that wants nothing to do with her. The book is the winner of the 2021 Bram Stoker Award for Novel. My Heart is a Chainsaw is a 2021 horror novel by Stephen Graham Jones and the first book in The Indian Lake Trilogy. While Ives’s oeuvre and the Lusitania’s fate may not be the most obvious fodder for a child-friendly tale, Stanbridge wisely depicts the sinking ship’s youngest passengers being saved, and shows how tragedy can inspire art. The sweet watercolors draw the reader into a century-old world. But Charles Ives - businessman by day, modernist composer by night - “grabs that big sound with both hands and shapes it into a song.” Stanbridge writes well for young children, with a straightforward but absorbing text. When the Lusitania’s whistle blows in port, many onlookers cover their ears. Written and illustrated by Joanne Stanbridge. IVES The True Story of a Famous American Composer. Squeak, Rumble, Whomp Whomp Whomp: A Sonic Adventure Wynton Marsalis Mar 2013 It is, in short, a story of friendship and true love, of loved ones parted and reunited, and the music that binds people (and pets) together. “Tabby McTat was a busker’s cat / With a meow that was loud and strong,” it begins, and what follows is the story of a hard-up street musician, his cat and his cat’s new wife. The team behind “Room on the Broom” pair up yet again in what has become a near-annual ritual of picture book perfection. One of the rare African American photojournalists in the field, Parks was frequently given magazine assignments involving social issues that his white colleagues were not asked to cover. In 1948, Gordon Parks (1912–2006) became the first African American photographer to be hired full time by LIFE magazine. Conservation and Collections Management. B) We have to wait until the end of the book to find out that Christian has no clue why he has the powers – he just does. He gets plenty worked up with Tanner during sex but the powers never appear to be a problem. The problems I had with the story were that A) We’re told that Christian can hurt someone with his powers when he gets too worked up but we never actually see that. I liked this book and the whole premise behind it all. They have communication issues about what their relationship is and it causes great angst. He ends up helping Tanner after he gets beaten up and the two end up in bed together. He gets hooked up with Tanner and after that one night can’t stop thinking about Tanner.
